For a successful colonoscopy, your bowel must be empty. Your physician will advise you on dietary restrictions and fluid intake, as well as any bowel preparation to be done, in the days prior to having a colonoscopy.
Be sure to arrange for a driver to bring you home after the colonoscopy. Effects of the sedatives may last up to 24 hours after administration. It is imperative that you do NOT engage in any potentially hazardous activity during this period such as driving a car.
Any known drug allergies or adverse reactions to medications should be reported to your physician or nurse prior to the procedure.
After the Colonoscopy
You will rest in a recovery room for 30 minutes for observation. You may feel some cramping or gas for a brief time after. Your doctor will consult with you on the results. You may be able to resume your normal diet, as instructed by your doctor. You should NOT drive for 24 hours after a colonoscopy.
