The Center for Diabetes at Northern Westchester Hospital is dedicated to providing a wide range of services and programs for people with diabetes.

In addition to supporting the needs of inpatients, the Center offers a comprehensive outpatient education program that focuses on meeting the individual needs of persons living with diabetes and their families. The Center also sponsors a monthly diabetes support group for adult patients.

Surgical weightloss for overweight or obese patients has been shown to treat type 2 diabetes.

Individuals who are overweight or obese have increased health risks type 2 diabetes among other conditions.  Studies show that patients with Type 2 diabetes who had bariatric surgery were significantly more likely to lower blood sugar to normal levels than those treated with drugs, diet, and exercise.

The NWH Center for Diabetes has been an American Diabetes Association Recognized Center for Diabetes Self-Management Education since 1992.

Inpatient Care

A Certified Diabetes Nurse Educator and a Registered Dietitian are available to help you when you are admitted to the hospital, so you can better understand and manage your diabetes. Working closely with your physician, an individualized treatment plan is developed which teaches you and your family members how to monitor and treat the disease.

Your Individualized Treatment Plan includes information on many topics, such as:

• Disease process and the complications of diabetes
• The diabetic diet and meal planning
• Exercise
• Medications, including insulin administration
• Blood glucose monitoring, target ranges, and testing schedules
• Stress management, coping with diabetes, and problem solving
• Special issues such as foot care, travel issues, and sick day management
• Blood glucose meters are provided to patients who need one, along with instruction in meter use

Medical Staff Support

Consulting physicians are available in the following specialties: Endocrinology, Infectious Disease, Orthopedics, Plastic Surgery, Podiatry (including Orthotics), Ophthalmology, Nephrology, Neurology, Interventional Radiology, Urology and Vascular Surgery.

Outpatient Services

For community members living with diabetes, the Center for Diabetes offers individual and group classes on an outpatient basis. The Outpatient Program teaches individuals to understand and manage their diabetes to better live a healthy life. Family members/significant others are encouraged to participate as well. Diabetes education is available for newly diagnosed patients, including pregnant women with gestational diabetes. The Center also sees patients who are not new to diabetes but who need a “refresher” or more detailed training in some aspect of their self-management care.

There is a fee for this program. A physician/nurse practitioner referral is required. Classes are reimbursable by most insurance carriers. Please check your plan to determine if you qualify.

The Diabetes Support Group

The Center for Diabetes invites patients to participate in the Northern Westchester Hospital Diabetes Support Group. Meetings are monthly and are open to the community. There is no fee, except for parking. Adults with diabetes and their families are encouraged to attend. Meetings last one hour, and there are both afternoon and evening sessions. Each month the meetings focus on a different topic. The meetings provide information, but also offer support and allow for interaction among the participants.
