Lactation Consultant: Breastfeeding education and support
Kim McKechnie, the lactation coordinator for Maternal Child Health at Northern Westchester Hospital. McKechnie and her staff teach moms--not just new moms but second- and third-time moms, too-- the mechanics of breastfeeding. They guide moms and babies to finding comfortable positions and helping babies latch on.
McKechnie also helps anxious and exhausted moms persevere through feeding issues such as slow weight gain. Once you leave the hospital, mom can continue to get her help with sore nipples or to identify an infection.
One mom interviewed said she hadn't stuck with breast-feeding with her first child. She says she found the support and education she needed to be able to breastfeed her second baby. She says McKechnie and her team supported--never pushed--her to be able to stick with breast-feeding her baby.
