NWH received a grant awarded by the Avon Foundation for Women at the NYC Avon Walk
The grant will be used to fund the NWH Breast Health Initiative (BHI). Although Northern Westchester Hospital (NWH) has long been a safety net for our underserved community, with generous support from the Avon Foundation since 2006, NWH has worked to eliminate healthcare disparities for underserved women and increase access to high quality breast healthcare services through our Breast Health Initiative.
Through BHI, underserved women (primarily Latinas) receive a holistic continuum of free, accessible, comprehensive, state-of-the-art, and timely breast health services. While some imaging centers in the community may provide initial breast screening, BHI is the source in northern Westchester for comprehensive breast health services, from education and screening to diagnosis, treatment and follow-up services.
BHI targets women age 40 and over or those at high risk, of whom about 90% live at or below the poverty level and 90% are without health insurance. As a NYS Cancer Services Program provider, NWH works with a variety of community partners that serve Latina women, including Open Door Family Medical Centers, Community Center of Northern Westchester and Neighbor’s Link to provide essential breast health education and services.
