At times, everyone needs a companion that will simply listen and provide comfort to help ease stress relating to a hospitalization or procedure. To help with this, Northern Westchester Hospital has established a dog visitation program with a team of specially trained Pet Therapy Dogs willing to give “an unconditional dose of love” to all patients, families and staff!
While a majority of visits take place in patient rooms and are catered to the individual needs and wishes of the patient and their families, our dogs also provide companionship, a furry distraction and reassurance. On our Transitional Care Unit our therapy dogs are included in physical, occupational and speech therapy treatments. Whatever the need may be - pet therapy visits can be arranged. Our dogs also lend their support to siblings, parents, visitors, medical staff and employees.
The arrival of a dog at a patient’s room provides the opportunity for a happy, memorable moment during what can be a very challenging time. Demand for the pet therapy program has grown since its inception with over 10,000 visits per year by our specially trained dogs and human handlers.
Our specialized Replication Program includes:
- Process Observation
- Recruitment, Evaluation and Training of Dog Teams
- Policy and Procedures
- Training Curriculum
