Northern Westchester Hospital is proud to offer a robust integrative therapies program to promote the well-being and healing process of the whole patient – body, mind, and spirit. Every individual has a natural ability to heal that comes from within oneself and our holistic team supports and assists the body’s natural healing process.
- Integrative therapies are offered to patients; see list of services below.
- Direct care providers receive specialized training to incorporate certain modalities into daily care — making these holistic therapies truly “integrated” into the plan of care.
- Specialized programs are also available for direct care providers.
Integrative Therapy Modalities Offered
ACUPUNCTURE: Acupuncture involves the insertion of extremely thin needles through the skin at strategic points on the body. Traditional Chinese medicine explains acupuncture as a technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force — known as qi or chi (CHEE) — believed to flow through pathways (meridians) in your body. By inserting needles into specific points along these meridians, acupuncture practitioners believe that a person’s energy flow will re-balance.
AROMATHERAPY: Clinical Aromatherapy uses essential oils for therapeutic purposes. Some essential oils promote relaxation and restful sleep, while others assist in relieving pain, nausea, depression or anxiety. Oils may be applied topically using a Gentle Touch technique on the hands, feet or back. Oils are effective when the aromas are inhaled and sachets are available for this purpose.
ENERGY HEALING/REIKI: Reiki is an ancient Japanese healing art that has been shown to ease pain and depression, balance emotions, enhance mental clarity, reduce stress and increase relaxation. Energy healing is a very gentle process involving light touch both on and above the body, working with the energy fields in and around the body.
THERAPEUTIC SUGGESTION/GUIDED IMAGERY: Therapeutic Suggestion utilizes relaxation and guided imagery techniques to enhance comfort levels and accelerate the healing process. The healing sounds of music and voice mix to help make thoughts more positive, peaceful and calming; allowing the body, mind and spirit to deeply relax and focus on the healing process.
Listening to these therapeutic recordings from home or at the Hospital. Guided Imagery has been shown to provide relief during stressful times. And reducing stress can positively affect healing.
GENTLE TOUCH/’m’ TECHNIQUE: These are very light touch therapies that work on the skin receptors which send signals to the brain to elicit a measurable relaxation response. Essential oils can be added to the massage oil delivering a topical application which enhances the therapeutic effect of the touch modality.
REFLEXOLOGY: Reflexology is a unique method of using the thumb and fingers to apply alternating pressure to specific reflex points on the feet or hands. In theory, the reflex areas in the feet/hands correspond to all of the glands, organs, muscles & tissues of the body. Reflexology enhances relaxation, improves circulation and rebalances the body.
