NWH Uses Advanced Radio-Frequency Identification to Take Efficiency and Patient Satisfaction to the Next Level
Radio-frequency identification (RFID) uses radio waves to identify, track and communicate information about objects back to a central monitor. In keeping with the Hospital’s commitment to innovation, the Biomedical Engineering department has implemented an RFID-based system to provide a continuous flow of automated data about hospital equipment – where it is, how much of it is on hand, and analytics that show trends in equipment use.
The high-tech RFID system improves Hospital efficiency regarding the immediate availability and potential reuse of equipment such as vital-sign monitors, EKG machines, infusion pumps, lifters and scanners. “We needed to be better able to locate equipment when needed,” says David Stotland, NWH’s director of Biomedical Engineering. “Patient satisfaction is goal number one for us. It’s the driving point for all our initiatives.”
